Black History Month

The month of February has been designated as Black History month. The Fall River Republican City Committee would like to acknowledge the many African Americans who, through their diversity and contributions, have helped shape the history and destiny of our country.

Though there are many African Americans who are members of many political parties, the Fall River Republican City Committee would like to highlight a few notable Republicans:

Rev. Martin Luther King. Jr.

Colin Powell, former Secretary of State

Condoleezza Rice- Secretary of State

Rod Paige, former Secretary of Education

Clarence Thomas, Assoc. Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States

Oscar J. Dunn, 1st Black Lieutenant. Governor in Louisiana 1868

Edward W. Brooke, 1st African American elected to US Senate

Hiram R. Revels, elected to fill US Senate seat formally held by Jefferson Davis 1870

Michael Powell, former FCC chairman

Ida B. Wells, Co Founder of NAACP

Lionel Hampton, musician

Yaphet Kotto, actor

Karl Malone, basketball player & two-time gold medal winner

Lynn Swann, football player

Jimmie Walker, actor, comedian

Herman Cain, president of Godfather’s Pizza

Robert A. George, journalist

Don King, boxing promoter

James Meredith, former civil rights activist

George Schuyler, journalist, novelist
